For those of you who don’t already know jailbreak is the process of removing all restrictions imposed by Apple on devices running on the iOS operating system such as iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The jailbreak procedure has evolved a lot since it first appeared; nowadays you can jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 with just a few clicks away by installing the latest jailbreak tools that support your iOS version. The main reason why people choose to jailbreak their iDevice is because they simply want complete freedom to customize it.
For example Apple doesn’t allow users to change themes on your iPhone. After the jailbreak process is complete you will automatically gain access to a 3rd party app store called Cydia. Here all the jailbreak apps get accepted and there are no restrictions. Cydia download store is pretty much like the App Store, only that here you will find most of the apps for free.
There are two kinds of jailbreak: tethered and untethered. The tethered jailbreak means that every time your iDevice runs out of battery life and it turns off you will need to boot it into the jailbreak state once more; in other words you will need to redo some of the jailbreak instructions each time it runs out of power. With the untethered jailbreak however you won’t encounter any of the problems above. Once you’ve jailbroken your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch untethered you are free to install whatever crosses your mind. However take notice that if you upgrade your iOS version the jailbreak state will disappear for good and you will have to wait for new jailbreak tools with support for the latest iOS version to emerge.
The latest iOS version officially released by Apple at the moment is iOS 5.1.1. Just recently jailbreak 6.0 tethered has become available for the general public as a result of Chronic Dev Team’s hard work.
